1. Arti Reformasi Kesehatan

1. Reformasi Kesehatan bukan hanya sekedar menghilangkan beberapa kebiasaan atau praktek untuk menghindari beberapa jenis makanan.

2. Reformasi Kesehatan:

(1) Menjangkau setiap fase kehidupan, mengerti dan mengadopsi segala kegiatan yang menyanggupkan tubuh, pikiran, dan jiwa agar dapat berfungsi secara efisien.

(2) Mengatur setiap kegiatan dengan prinsip-prinsip pertarakan yang benar; hidup selaras dengan seluruh hukum-hukum Tuhan dan mempromosikan dalam diri manusia untuk menampilkan suatu penampilan yang tertinggi yang dapat dicapai.

2. Prinsip-prinsip Reformasi Kesehatan

(1) Mengetahui apa yang menjadi tanggung jawab dan tugas kita, baik tanggung jawab dan tugas kepada Allah, maupun kepada diri sendiri dan orang lain.

(2) Melakukan yang terbaik yang dapat kita lakukan pada lingkungan dimana kita berada. (CDF 256)

(3) Menghindari segala sesuatu yang berbahaya (harmful)

Dalam buku “God’s Messengers,” E.G. White membagi hal yang “berbahaya” (harmful) dalam dua kategori:

a) Patently Harmful (Yang Jelas-jelas berbahaya)


daging babi

makanan haram

rokok (tembakau)


teh, dll

b) Tidak Begitu Berbahaya jika hanya digunakan dalam takaran yang sedang (secukupnya):

- gula

- susu

- telur

(4) Menggunakan Secukupnya Hal-hal yang Menyehatkan:

Contoh: Sinar Matahari

(5) Jangan membuat hidup seseorang menjadi standard yang harus diikuti.

CDF 491 “one person not be matter for other in diet.”

(6) Tunjukkanlah belas kasihan dan murah hati.

3. Tujuan Reformasi Kesehatan

(1) Memperkembang kesempurnaan dalam kehidupan manusia

CH 634: “God’s purpose for His children is that they grow up to the full stature of men and women in Christ. In order to do this they must use aright every power of mind, soul and body. They can not afford to waste any mental or physical strength.”

(2) Agar dapat membebaskan diri dari bahaya

3T 561 “... by walking in the light of health reform, we may escape many dangers to which we will be exposed. Satan’s temptations are powerful upon the human family ... by indulging appetite, gratify inclination, and live a life of heedless folly. In temperate indulgences are reducing the vital energies of both body and mind.”

(3) Untuk Membangun tabiat

MH 130 “The body is the only medium through which the mind and the soul are developed for the upbuilding the character. Hence it is that the adversary of souls directs his temptations to the enfeebling and degrading of the physical powers.

(4) Sebab dengan Kesehatan Kita Dapat Menggunakan Talenta Kita sebaik Mungkin

COL 346 “health is a blessing of which few appreciate the value; yet upon it the efficiency of our mental and physical powers largely depends. Our impulses and passions have their seat in the body, and it must be kept in the best condition physically, and under the most spiritual influences, in order that our talents may be put to the highest use.”

(5) Untuk Membuat Tubuh Kita Layak (Fit) untuk Melayani

COL 346 “... Our bodies have been given to us to use in God’s service, and He desires that we shall care for and appreciate them ... Our bodies must be kept in the best possible condition physically, and under the most spiritual influences, in order that we may make the best use of our talents.”

4. Bagaimana Cara Mengajarkan Reformasi Kesehatan

(1) Mulailah dari hal yang sama-sama dapat diterima

3T 426 “The truths that we hold in common should be welt upon fist, and the

confidence of the hearers obtained.”

(2) Hindari kritik, ekstrim, dan hal-hal yang menimbulkan perlawanan

MH 319 “No one criticize others because their practice is not, in all things, in harmony with his own. It is impossible to make an unvarying rule to regulate everyone’s habits, and no one should think himself a criterion for all.”

2T 538 “Health reformers, above all others, should be careful to shun extremes.”

(3) Temui orang-orang dimana mereka berada

CD 460 “In taching health reform, as in all other gospel work, we are to meet the people where they are. Until we can teach them how to prepare health reforms foods that are ... nourishing, and yet inexpensive, we are not at liberty to present the most advanced positions regarding health reform diet.”

(4) Tonjolkanlah hal-hal yang positif

MS 87, 1908 “As we near the close of time, we must rise higher and still higher on the question on health reform and Christian temperance, presenting it in a more positive and decided manner. We must strive continually to educate the people, not only by our words but by our practicce. Precept and practice combined have a telling influence.”

(5) Bagi-bagilakanlah dalam kesenangan, kegembiraan dan sikap yang hormat

MS 55, 1901 “He who truly converted will be so filled with the love of God that he will long to impart to others the joy that he himself possesses ... Heaven is to be reflected in the character of the Christian. The song of gratitude and praise is to be heard by those in darkness ... Those who live nearest to heaven will reflect the brightness of the sun of righteousness.

5. Hubungan Reformasi Kesehatan Dengan Pekerjaan Injil Pada Zaman Akhir.

(1) Sebagai Jalan untuk Masuk kepada firman Tuhan (An entering wedge)

UT. Nov 19, 1895 “... That health reform principles would be as an entering wedge to be followed by a religious influence. To voice the words of John, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”

(2) Untuk Persiapan Menghadapi Seruan Nyaring (Preparation for Loud Cry)

1T 486 “We as a people must make an advance move in this great work. Ministers and people must act in concert. God’s people are not prepared for the loud cry of third angel; they have a work to do for themselves which they should not leave for God to do for them. It is an individual work:L one can not do it for other.

(3) Untuk Menghilangkan Prasangka (Prejudice Removed)

CT 121 “Much of the prejudice that prevents the truth of the third angel’s message from reaching the heart of

the people, might be removed if more attention were given to health reform. When people become interested in this subject, the way if often prepared for the entrance of other truths.”

6. Hubungan Reformasi Kesehatan Dengan Kerohanian

1. Mengendalikan keinginan (kehendak)

UT. Jan 11, 1897 “Satan knows that he cannot overcome man unless he can control his will. He can do this by deceiving man so that he will co-operate with him in transgressing the laws of nature.

2. Membuat kita perduli terhadap terang

RH Nov. 19, 1883 “One reason why we do not enjoy more of the blessing of the Lord is, we do not heed the light which he has been pleased to give us in regard to the laws of life and health.”

3. Mempengaruhi tabiat

3T 50,51 “If our physical are not right, our mental and moral powers cannot be strong; for great sympathy exists between the physical and the moral ... Habits which lower the standard of physical health, enfeeble the mental and moral strength.”

4. Berpengaruh terhadap pikiran

CT 117 “Unless they practice true temperance, they will not, they cannot, be susceptible to the sanctifying influence of the truth.”

5. Berpengaruh terhadap moral

RH 1881 No. 4 “Excessive eating of even the best of food will produce a morbid condition of the moral feelings .... Wrong habits of eating and drinking lead to errors in thought and action. Indulgence of appetite strengthens the animal propensities, giving them the ascendency over the mental and spiritual powers ... Everything that conflicts with natural law creates a diseased condition of the soul.”

6. Tubuh sebagai persembahan yang hidup

Romans 12:1 “I urge you ... to offer your bodies holy to God.

UT Aug 25, 1897 “The Lord requires a living sacrifice of mind, soul, body, and strength. All that we have and are is to be given to him, that we may answer the purpose of our creation.”

7. Hal itu adalah merupakan rencana Allah

UT, Oct 12, 1896 “God’s way is to give man something that he has not ... God’s plan is to set man at work in reformatory lines, then he will learn by experience how long he has tampered with freshly appetites, and ministered to his own temperament, bringing weakness upon himself. God’s way is to work in power. God proposes to purify and refine the defiled soul, then he will implant in the heart his own righteousness and peace and health, and man will become complete in him.’

8. Merupakan tugas kita kepada orang lain

RH 1884, N0 31 “It is the duty of those who have received light upon this important subject to manifest a greater interest for those who are still suffering for want of knowledge. Those who are looking for the soon appearing of their Savior should be the last to manifest a lack of interest in this great work of reform ... This (2 or 7:1) is our work as Christians, to cleans out robes of character from every spot. The Spirit must be in harmony with the spirit of Christ; the habits must be in conformity to his will, in obidience to his requirements.”

7. Siapa yang bertanggung jawab terhadap Reformasi Kesehatan?

1. Para pekerja Injil

MM 242 “Gospel ministers should be able to present the subject of health reform in its simplicity, in a clear, Christlike manner, it will have an effect upon the people. There will be a response from many hearts.”

2. Para Dokter

MH 127 “Let the physicians teach the people that restorative power is not in drugs, but in nature.

Disease ... from a violation of the laws of health. In case the sickness, the cause

should be ascertained ... wrong habits corrected. Pure air, sunlight, abstemiousness,

rest, exercises, proper diet, the use of water, trust in divine power, these are the true

remedies. Every person should have a knowledge of ... how to apply them.”

3. Rumah-rumah Sakit Advent dan Lembaga Kesehatan Advent

CD 446 “All who visit our health institutions are to be educated ... Carefully prepared instruction is to be given, that indulgence in fashionable intemperance in eating and drinking may be seen as the cause of disease and suffering and of evil practices that follow as a result.”

8. Kronologi perkembangan pekabaran kesehatan E. G. White dan reformasi kesehatan.

1743 - John Wesly (Methodist) menghimbau orang-orang Kristen untuk tidak membeli, menjual atau menggunakan minuman-minuman yang mengandung alkohol. Himbauan ini juga termasuk untuk tidak menggunakan teh dan dan tembakau.

1790 - Dr. Benjamin Rush (Quacker) mengorganisir Perhimpunan Pertarakan Amerika yang pertama.

1824(Juni) - Joseph Bates bertobat dan menjadi anggota Gereja Masehi Advent Hari Ketujuh.

1824 - Joseph Bates memutuskan untuk tidak menggunkan minuman-minuman beralkohol.

1827, Nov 26 - Ellen G. White lahir di Gorham, Maine

1831 - Joseph Bates memutuskan untuk tidak meminum kopi dan teh setelah mendengarkan ceramah dari Sylvester Graham bahwa kedua hal itu (teh dan kopi) adalah merupakan jenis tumbuh-tumbuhan yang paling beracun.

1836 - Sylvester Graham (Presbyterian) menganjurkan bahwa semakin dekat manusia hidup dengan alam, semakin harmonislah dia hidup dengan hukum Allah yang berhubungan dengan organisme tubuh manusia dan tubuhnyapun semakin sehat, begitu juga dengan moral dan pikirannya.

1840 - Pertama sekali mendengar William Miller mengkhotbahkan pekabaran Advent (kedatangan Tuhan)

1842 - Dibaptiskan dan diterima menjadi anggota gereja Methodist

1843 - Joseph Bates menjadi orang pemelihara Sabat yang pertama yang mengadopsi makanan vegetaris

1846 (musim gugur) - Menerima Sabat hari ketujuh

1848 - Ellen G. White menerima khayal bahwa tembakau adalah rerumputan yang kotor

Khayal Ellen G. White tentang pengaruh kopi dan teh yang berbahaya

GEORGE Task mendukung Ellen G. White dengan mengetengahkan tembakau sebagai sesuatu yang membahayakan bagi para pekerja Allah dan bagi kehendak Allah.

John Andrews menggunakan ayat-ayat Alkitab untuk mempertahankan kampanye anti tembakau.

1850 - Diorganisirnya Asosiasi Vegetaris Amerika Para pemelihara Sabat mempertanyakan mengenai penggunaan babi

1851 - Ellen G. White mengirimkan surat kepada jemaat-jemaat untuk mengkonfirmasikan khayal-khayal yang diterimanya sehubungan dengan kopi, teh dan tembakau.

1852 - John Harvey Kellog ditobatkan oleh Joseph Bates

1853 - Para pemelihara Sabat menemukan alasan-alasan mengapa narkotika itu harus disingkirkan

1854 - Khayal Ellen G. White sehubungan dengan kebersihan pribadi dan kebersihan lingkungan

1855 - para penatua jemaat memutuskan untuk mendisiplin anggota-anggota gereja yang tetap menggunakan tembakau setelah mereka melalukan pekerjaan yang banyak.

1858 - Haskells menantang White dalam hal issue penggunaan daging babi. Ellen G. White menjawab (6T 327) “Allah akan menemukan hal itu lebih dari 2-3 dan mengajarkan gerejaNya akan tugas-tugas mereka.’

1863 (21 Mei) - Para pemelihara Sabat mengorganisir diri mereka dibawah General Conference

(6 Juni) - Ellen White mendapat khayal sehubungan dengan reformasi kesehatan dan menyudahi (menyelesaikan) pertanyaan dalam hal makanan babi.

“I saw that it was a sacred duty to attend to our health and arouse others to do their duty ... We have a duty to speak, to come out against intemperance of every kind ... I saw that we should not be silent upon the subject of health but should wake up the minds to the subject.” SHM 78

1864 (musim panas) - Spiritual Gifts V 4 sebuah artikel yang berhubungan dengan kesehatan yang terdiri dari 30 halaman.

1865 (25 Des)- Ellen G. White mendapat khayal bahwa kita harus memiliki lembaga kesehatan

Diterbitkannya sebuah pamplet yang berjudul

Health: or How to Live

1866 (Mei) - Ellen G. White didatangi oleh Dr. H.S. Lay seorang dokter Advent dari Allegan, Michigan dan ia merasa yakin bahwa pekabaran dan pandangan Ellen G. White mengenai kesehatan bukanlah berasal dari manusia.

(Sept 5)- Mulainya beroperasi Western Health Reform institute. Institusi kesehatan inilah yang kelak menjadi Battle Creek Sanitarium and Hospital

1894 - Ellen G. White memutuskan untuk berhenti memakan daging ... Dia membuat suatu janji pada saat ada pertemuan di Brighton, dekat Melbourne, Australia.

1895 (01 Okt) - Murid pertama yang mendaftar di American Medical Missionary College (Sekolah kesehatan Battle Creek)

1903 - Ellen White mendapat khayal untuk memperluas tanah (harta milik) di daerah pedesaan atau pedalaman di Southern CA.

1904 - Dioperasikannya Rumah Sakit dan Sanitarium Glendale

Dioperasikannya Rumah Sakit dan Sanitarium Paradise Valley

1905 - Ellen White menganjurkan untuk menggunakan obat alami seperti diet (nutrisi), air dll.

Dicetaknya buku Ministry of Healing

Nov Dioperasikannya College of Medical Evangelist, yang mana kemudian berubah nama menjadi Loma linda University medical Center

1906, Jan - Sekolah Keperawatan Loma Linda mulai dibuka

1907, Juli 10 - Tujuh orang tamatan pertama Sekolah Keperawatan Loma Linda

1910, Jan - Didirikannya College of Medical Evangelist di Loma Linda

1914, June 11 - 6 orang Dokter ditamatkan pertama sekali dari College of Medical Evangelist

1915, July 16 - Ellen G. White wafat pada usia 87 tahun
